The Bodie Ghost Town in California offers a hauntingly beautiful glimpse of history when the California Gold Rush happened between 1877 and 1882. It was once a thriving town born from the Gold Rush attracting over 8,000 residences turning it into a boom town due to the rapid population and economic growth, now it is but a ghost town frozen in time. The ghost town depicted in these photographs by Deryk Baumgärtner in his photographic series "Bodie Ghost Town" showcases the town's cabins, structures, and mines still standing in a state of "arrested decay".

With interiors left as they were to decay from the last resident's departure, it presents a visual narrative that shows the allure and desolation of the Wild West now. Baumgärtner’s remarkable work conveyed the eerie and quietness of Bodie while at the same time suggesting a lingering presence.

The cabins, though abandoned, appear as if they could still be inhabited, with the photographer’s careful framing and attention to detail giving the impression that life might resume at any moment.
