Heito 1909 Preserves Taiwanese History with its Unique Landscaping Design

Heito 1909 is a transformation of one of Taiwan’s most historical landmarks into a beautifully paved public gathering place.

Adaptive reuse of a landmark requires a certain form of finesse from the landscaper and designer, where your ideas should not crumble decades of history in the process.

For the people at ECG International Landscape and the Pingtung County, Taiwan, this is not a problem with their beautifully built Heito 1909.

Heito 1909’s location used to be one of Taiwan’s historical sugar factory. To preserve the ruins for the Taiwanese residents, the designers sought to recover and identify each remaining structure before creating the public space.

The major work also extends to the creek, where it is intentionally kept as a reminder of its past as a concrete ditch filled with industrial waste water and Heito, a time of exploration and agriculture.

Its designs are meticulously crafted to perfection, allowing many to enjoy the day while soaking in the wonderful history behind the very ground they're standing on.

This is one of the best examples of how to win yourself a MUSE Design Awards victory while working towards a better landscaping design that benefits others in the future. Great job, ECG!
