Inside the IAA Jury Room: Judging Creativity Through the Lens of Pancho Gonzalez

Pancho Gonzalez

Pancho Gonzalez is the Co-founder and Chief Creative Officer of Inbrax, where he leads the creation of strategic brand experiences that combine storytelling with measurable business impact. His experience guiding impactful campaigns and translating ideas into meaningful brand experiences enables him to assess innovation through both creative excellence and real-world effectiveness.

I’m the Co-Founder and Chief Creative Officer of Inbrax, one of Chile’s leading independent agencies. Over the past two decades, I’ve worked across advertising, digital transformation, innovation, AI-driven creativity, retail media, and brand building. My work has been recognized with more than 300 international awards, and I’ve had the privilege of serving as a juror for festivals such as Cannes Lions, The One Show, Clio, D&AD, New York Festivals, Effie, Webby Awards, and many others. Today, my focus is helping brands stay culturally relevant in a world increasingly shaped by technology and creativity.

I have been honored to collaborate with the NYX Awards as a juror because I believe it offers a valuable platform for recognizing creative excellence from diverse markets and disciplines. What attracted me most is NYX’s commitment to celebrating both innovation and effectiveness, giving visibility to work that might not always come from traditional creative centers.

I look at three key dimensions: originality, relevance, and impact. A great idea should surprise me, but it should also solve a real problem or create meaningful value. I evaluate whether the execution elevates the idea and whether the work creates a genuine connection with its intended audience. Creativity without purpose is decoration; creativity with impact is transformation.

I always focus on the work itself, not the agency, market, budget, or reputation behind it. Great ideas can come from anywhere. I evaluate each entry against the same standards and try to understand the cultural context in which it was created. My responsibility as a juror is to reward excellence, regardless of origin or scale.

Discovering ideas that challenge conventions. Every judging session reminds me that creativity continues to evolve and that brilliant thinking can emerge from unexpected places. It's inspiring to witness how different cultures, technologies, and perspectives shape the future of communication.

One of the most difficult situations is when comparing a beautifully executed campaign with a highly innovative idea that may have had a more modest production budget. In those cases, I return to the fundamentals: the strength of the idea, the problem being solved, and the effectiveness of the solution. Execution matters, but the idea must always lead.

Curiosity is my most valuable professional skill. I regularly follow global creative festivals, emerging technologies, AI developments, social platforms, cultural movements, and consumer behavior studies. I also teach, speak at industry events, and collaborate with professionals across different disciplines, which constantly exposes me to new perspectives.

Focus on clarity. Many great projects lose strength because the story is not told effectively. Make sure the jury quickly understands the challenge, the insight, the idea, and the results. And remember: judges review many entries. Simplicity is often more powerful than complexity.

Absolutely. We're seeing a shift from interruption-based advertising toward participation-based creativity. Audiences increasingly want to be part of the experience. AI is also transforming creative workflows, but the most successful work is not about technology itself—it’s about using technology to create more human, relevant, and meaningful experiences.

I hope to see ideas that challenge the status quo and reflect the realities of the world we live in today. I'm particularly interested in work that demonstrates how creativity can drive positive change, solve complex problems, and create measurable impact for people, communities, and brands.

What stays with me are not necessarily individual projects, but the moments when a simple idea completely reframes a problem. The most memorable entries are often the ones that make you think, “I wish I had come up with that.” Those ideas remind us why creativity remains one of the most powerful forces in business and society.

I believe feedback should always be respectful, specific, and useful. The goal is not simply to explain why an entry did not succeed, but to identify opportunities for improvement. Every submission represents passion, effort, and belief in an idea. Constructive feedback helps transform today's entry into tomorrow's award-winning work.
