Anqi Liu Bridges Performance and Emotion in Self Interaction

Anqi Liu

Anqi Liu, a visionary designer, was inspired by her study of ECG monitoring systems and flexible electrical sensors. With this project, she aims to create an interactive library that blends motion and fashion, where sportswear and design converge to shape a more sustainable, human-centred future for sports fashion.

I’m truly excited. Design work can be repetitive and demanding, and this honour has inspired me to keep challenging myself in the field. Thank you to the French Fashion Awards for establishing the Sportswear category—I hope more designers will be encouraged to explore this area.

I was originally inspired by a study of ECG monitoring systems and flexible electrical sensors.

With this project, I hope to establish an interactive library of motion representation in fashion—serving as a platform where fashion and professional sportswear can complement one another, emphasising both functionality and design to create more human-centred, sustainable sports fashion.

As we’re seeing a growing connection between fashion creativity and scientific research, this trend has fuelled the direction of my exploration. I aim to express both the external and internal interactions between the mind and body in a more practical, tangible way. This project also seeks to offer a softer, more healing perspective on functional garments.

The main challenge lies in combining electronic technology with design. To tackle this, I researched academic papers on ECG monitoring technology and electronic fibres, and consulted relevant experts. And then—try, try, try…

I believe it will drive me to be more confident and fuel my ambitions.

Personally, it’s an affirmation of my reflections on life over the past period.

Professionally, it has strengthened my passion for sportswear design—a field where aesthetics and technology come together. I believe it’s rich in humanistic care; from fabrication to pattern cutting to function, every element reflects the designer’s understanding of the body and movement.

It allows the wearer to feel alive in every inch of skin and muscle, while offering protection that empowers them. It’s always been something that excites me. This award also reinforces my confidence in the future of this path.

I was deeply impressed when I conducted the ECG monitoring experiment. Seeing a professional electronic instrument for the first time and personally experiencing the heart rate monitor made me feel like a scientist!

It involved a great deal of physics and material knowledge. Although I’m not particularly strong in science, the process gave me a profound appreciation for the meaning and value of science and technology.

My family environment played a big role. My father was formerly an interior designer, is now a construction engineer, and is also a passionate collector of Chinese antiques.

Growing up in a household steeped in art and design, I naturally developed a strong interest in the arts. As a teenager, I stumbled upon my first fashion magazine, and from that moment, I fell in love with collecting fashion content. Through this process, I set my sights on becoming a fashion designer—and I honestly can’t imagine doing anything else.

Sustainability remains a constant topic of discussion, with new solutions continuing to emerge across all areas of the industry. During my BA studies, as a student representative specialising in sportswear design, I had the honour of attending the ISPO Masterclass—the world’s largest sports equipment exhibition—in Munich.

There, I saw many outstanding designers and products, all showcasing technological innovations with a strong focus on sustainability.

Stay confident. Take the step. Face the frustrations.

I will have more collaboration collections with professional sports brand and celebrities.

As a sportswear designer, I constantly think about how I can break through more technical barriers and take my designs to a higher level. Beyond studying sports performance, I wonder if it's possible to explore and represent mental activities through products. This project became an opportunity to explore that possibility. It is a long-term goal.

Firstly, diversity. I will incorporate more topics related to minority groups and culture in my work.

Additionally, sustainability will remain a constant topic of discussion. I am seeking more collaborations and support to find better solutions from all aspects of the industry, including material suppliers.

I usually use mind mapping to help me identify the logical sequence and steps to solve problems. During the implementation process, I repeatedly communicate with my clients, offering them different options and gradually honing in on their core needs.

Additionally, I combine their needs with innovative solutions and find ways to encourage my clients to allocate more space and budget for innovation.

It has a great influence on my designs and is becoming increasingly important with the growth of my study and work experience. In addition to expressing ourselves, designers also have a responsibility to convey our cultural heritage. I am proud of my cultural background, and I believe there are many cultural treasures worth discovering that deserve to be passed on—to be seen and remembered by more people.

"Your design makes me feel like today is such a good day."

A successful collection always feels alive, and that is what excites me. It also tells a story. A successful collection is timeless.

The imagination and attitude!

I am happy that the French Fashion Award has introduced the Sportswear category. I believe this will attract more attention to this field, which will undoubtedly encourage sportswear designers to realise the greater significance their work can bring.

There are many outstanding people who have inspired me in my life—my family, my teachers, and my team members. I can always learn wisdom and life philosophy from them, as well as valuable qualities. I am deeply grateful to have these people in my life.

I love the people I work with; everyone is professional, practical, genuine, friendly, and willing to share their knowledge with younger talents. Everyone is focused on delivering better solutions and products. I’m proud of everyone in this industry.
