Inside the Jury Room: Fizza Shah on Championing Meaningful Creativity

Fizza Shah

As Chief Creative Officer of Digitz Group, Fizza Shah brings more than a decade of experience leading multidisciplinary creative teams across branding, advertising, film, digital, and integrated campaigns. Her work is defined by strategic thinking, compelling storytelling, and a deep understanding of creativity's power to influence culture.

I have spent more than 13 years in advertising and creative communications, working across film, digital, social media, design, and integrated brand experiences. Today, as Chief Creative Officer, I lead multidisciplinary teams in creating ideas that connect brands with people in meaningful ways.

What has always fascinated me about this industry is its ability to influence culture, shape conversations, and forge emotional connections. Throughout my career, I've had the opportunity to work on both commercial and purpose-driven campaigns, and that balance has given me a deep appreciation for creativity as both an art form and a catalyst for change.

I have had the privilege of serving as a judge for the MUSE Creative Awards since 2022. The opportunity immediately appealed to me because it offers a front-row seat to some of the world's most inspiring creative work.

As creatives, we often work within our own markets and cultural contexts, and judging allows me to step beyond those boundaries, discover new perspectives, and celebrate ideas that move the industry forward. It is both a privilege and a valuable learning experience, and every year I come away inspired by the ingenuity, passion, and craftsmanship behind the work submitted.

I look for ideas that are original, meaningful, and beautifully executed. A great creative idea should be surprising while remaining grounded in a genuine human truth.

Beyond originality, I pay close attention to the quality of the storytelling, the level of craftsmanship, and how effectively the execution brings the idea to life. The entries that stay with me are often the ones that make me think, feel, or see the world in a completely new way.

I approach every entry with curiosity and an open mind. Creativity exists in every corner of the world, and great ideas are not defined by budgets, production scale, or market size.

I evaluate each entry on its own creative merit, execution, and objectives while also considering whether it is the right fit for its category. My goal is to assess every submission fairly and give each idea an equal opportunity to stand out.

The most challenging decisions often involve entries that excel in different ways. I have evaluated work where one entry demonstrated exceptional craftsmanship and execution, while another presented a simpler concept with a remarkably powerful idea at its core.

In moments like these, I strip everything back to the essence of creativity. I ask myself which idea is truly distinctive, which one advances creative thinking, and which is most likely to leave a lasting impression. That approach helps me remain objective while keeping my focus on the work itself rather than personal preferences.

Curiosity is probably my most important professional habit. While I stay informed through award shows, industry publications, and creative festivals, I find that the most valuable insights come from people and culture. Travel, in particular, has broadened my perspective by exposing me to different communities, traditions, and ways of seeing the world.

Those experiences have helped me uncover the human truths behind behavior and emotion—insights that ultimately become the foundation of the most compelling creative ideas.

Lead with the idea. Strong craftsmanship and polished presentation are important, but they can never compensate for a weak concept. The strongest entries communicate a clear insight, a compelling creative leap, and an execution that brings the idea to life.

I also encourage participants to tell their story with clarity. Make it easy for judges to understand what makes the work distinctive and why it deserves recognition.

One of the most interesting developments has been the growing intersection of creativity and technology. While new tools continue to transform how work is created and experienced, the most successful entries are still driven by strong ideas and authentic storytelling.

Technology can enhance creativity, but it rarely replaces it. I've also noticed a growing appreciation for work that celebrates local culture and distinct perspectives, demonstrating that authenticity often resonates on a global scale.

I hope to encounter work that genuinely surprises me. The most memorable creative ideas challenge assumptions and encourage us to see familiar things from a new perspective. I'm excited to see entries that demonstrate bold thinking, exceptional craftsmanship, and the confidence to take creative risks.

Above all, I hope to see work that reminds us why creativity remains such a powerful force for connecting people, inspiring change, and shaping culture.

What I find most memorable are the entries that achieve something extraordinary through simplicity. Over the years, I've seen projects that relied not on massive budgets or advanced technology, but on a beautifully observed insight and an elegantly executed idea.

Those entries stay with me because they remind us that creativity is ultimately about perspective. They reinforce a belief I've held throughout my career: the most powerful ideas are often the simplest, expressed in ways that feel fresh, authentic, and unforgettable.

I believe constructive feedback begins with recognizing what works. Even when an entry doesn't fully meet the award criteria, there is almost always something meaningful in the idea, ambition, or execution that deserves recognition.

While awards celebrate excellence, they should also encourage growth. My approach is to evaluate every entry fairly while inspiring creatives to refine their craft, build on their strengths, and continue pushing creative boundaries.
