Andy Yu

As a student in Rhode Island School of Design who majored in Industrial Design, Andy Yu's works mainly derive from social issues such as sexuality and feminism.

I studied at Rhode Island School of Design, industrial design major, and apparel concentration. I love to draw inspiration from history and the world around me.My work focuses on social issues such as gender, sexuality, feminism. It is important to me that my work holds a certain significance and value, not just beauty for beauty’s sake.

It means a lot to me to because it means that my ideas and work are validated. It is always nice to have others appreciate your ideas and thoughts as I have always been inspired by others as well.

'My tree at least you shall be' is very special to me because it came out of my first travel experience in Europe. This project came from my direct studies of classical Italian art and sculptures. To be able to shed light on gender topics through storytelling and apparel is what I wanted to accomplish.

The biggest challenge with this project is harmonizing traditional handwork with technology.I had to learn digital embroidery and its complement program and test a series of samples on different fabrics based on weight, thread and color, determining the best combination of beads and embroidery while ensuring fit and movement.

Winning the Award has validated my interest in the career of apparel. I believe it has also set me on a path of knowing who I am as a designer and working towards projects that differentiates myself from others.

Don’t be afraid to put yourself and your work out there. It is a rewarding experience for students because students get to express their fresh perspective that is often what the industry is looking for.

My key to success is trusting in oneself and one's vision. One has to perfect one's practice and knowledge of the subject.Always be open to different experiences, inspirations, and opportunities as they are what makes you unique. At the end of the day, creating work that you are proud of is already a success in itself.
