Interview with Tienny The, Animator, SG

Tienny The

Tienny is an animator who focuses on illustration and animation for young children, with art styles veering heavily towards educational and manga style. Her works includes working on comic inking for Association of Comic Artists (Singapore) and the illustration of children's book, "An Instrument of Eddie".

I am an animator who graduated with a Diploma in Animation Art from Lasalle College of the Arts and currently majoring in Illustration and Animation Design at Raffles College of Higher Education in Singapore.During my study at Raffles, I have enhanced my writing skills, especially in scriptwriting. I am adept in using design programs such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, After Effect, and Premiere Pro.Moreover, I am self-motivated to pursue higher knowledge and acquire rich industry experiences to strengthen my skills and portfolio. Winning this award encourages me to strive harder to excel in my prospective services to publishers, educational institutions such as kindergartens and childcare centers, and even in the development of teaching and training curriculum.

My focus is illustration and animation for young children with the interest in the pre-production process – script, storyboarding and character design, and illustration. My style leans heavily towards the educational style.

I feel very honored and privileged to win this award for my artwork.

Muse Award invited me to participate. Besides that, my teachers encouraged my classmates and me to enter our artworks into competitions.Because of this, I submitted my illustration show reels to the Muse Award competition. The artwork that I submitted for the 2019 Muse Awards is an illustration show reel with the concept of a museum in the deep ocean, where a lost sea turtle curiously enters the museum and is able to enjoy the diverse styles of illustrations.

Discussing the story concept with my lecturer and the attempt to improve and to finalize the story is the biggest challenge of this illustration show reel. While executing the project, my understanding of the animation software deepened and I managed to complete the project within the time constraints. Even though the assignment had been submitted, I still tried to improve further.

Winning this award encouraged me to strive better and excel in my prospective services.

Teamwork, problem solving through storytelling, and design thinking to make tangible solutions.

There is definitely a growing interest in the creative industry amongst Singapore job seekers.

Personally, I feel that the creative industry in Singapore will be gradually growing in creativity and effectiveness.

Personally, I enjoy dwelling and delving deeper into the presented creativity. My advice is to take the time and effort to research the subject and/or the problem to understand it well.

Self-motivation and willingness are important self-resources for yourself. You should also seek out and attend skill-related workshops that interest you.

The stories I write are quite connected to my dreams – sometimes, a dream inspires a story to be written; other times, a story I’ve already written later appears in my dream.

My grandparents, parents, close auntie, my close friends, and my ex-boss inspired me to be the best version of myself.

Feedback helps to improve your work.
