Interview with Mei Lu from United States

Mei Lu

Over the course of her design career, Mei Lu has engaged in a wide range of projects, spanning environmental design, interaction design, and industrial design. Embracing this diversity of experiences has equipped her with valuable insights and knowledge, empowering her to create comprehensive systems for products.

I consider myself a product designer with a passion for multidisciplinary exploration. Throughout my design journey, I have delved into diverse projects from environmental design to interaction design and industrial design. Embracing these varied experiences has allowed me to gather valuable knowledge and insights that enable me to build holistic systems around products.

Becoming a designer was a natural choice for me because I've always been drawn to the problem-solving aspect of it. The thrill of finding creative solutions to real-life challenges is incredibly fulfilling. As a designer, I have the opportunity to transform ideas into tangible realities, which is immensely gratifying.

I am currently working at an AI company in the United States and I am incredibly excited about the opportunities it presents. As a part of the team, my job profile involves leveraging my design skills to create intuitive and user-centred experiences that integrate AI technologies seamlessly. Working in this AI-focused environment empowers me to contribute to the foreseeable future by enhancing human-technology interactions.

To me, design is a captivating problem-solving process that blends creativity with logic and systematic thinking. It's a methodical approach to crafting solutions that address real-world challenges and improve people's lives.

My favourite kind of design is one that involves thinking about the entire product ecosystem. I enjoy logical and systematic approaches that consider the user's needs and seamlessly integrate aesthetics and functionality.

To me, a ‘good’ design is one that strikes a harmonious balance between being systematic, logical, and user-centred. It should be built upon a well-thought-out structure and clear principles, ensuring coherence and efficiency. The user's needs and goals should be at the core of the design, providing a seamless and intuitive experience. Simultaneously, it should align with the objectives of the service or product supplier, creating a win-win scenario.

The idea for my award-winning design emerged through a combination of keen observation and in-depth research. By thoroughly examining the existing product system and understanding its strengths and weaknesses, I identified areas for improvement and innovation.

My main source of inspiration for this design stems from my deep appreciation for thorough research. Throughout the design process, I cherish both user research and market research, along with insights into the company's visions and goals. Gathering all this valuable information allows me to create an extensive information library, where I can organise and retrieve useful data.

Absolutely, my country and its cultural heritage have a profound impact on my design process. Growing up in a fairly international and diverse environment has provided me with a broader perspective, enabling me to understand different market dynamics, societal structures, and human behaviours. This understanding helps me identify patterns and unique opportunities that may be overlooked by others.

Winning the London Design Awards is an incredible honour for me! This prestigious recognition reaffirms our commitment to innovation, creativity, and excellence in the design industry. It serves as validation for the hard work and motivates us to strive for even greater heights and provide our clients with outstanding experiences.

The winning work I entered into the London Design Awards showcases my approach to designing products from a holistic system level. I carefully selected these projects as they best represent my design philosophy. They encompass two distinct aspects: one project is more enterprise-focused, catering to organisational needs and objectives while the other is deeply customer or user-focused, emphasising seamless user experiences.

During the design process, the main challenges revolved around research and gathering sufficient information to build a robust system. To overcome these obstacles, I dedicated significant time to conducting user interviews, extensive market research, and first-hand observations. These efforts enabled me to develop a well-informed and user-centred design that addressed the complexities of the project effectively.

Winning this award will have a profound impact on my future as a designer. It serves as validation of my skills, creativity, and dedication, boosting my confidence in pursuing more ambitious and innovative projects.

The ever-evolving nature of the industry, the interaction between people and the market and the freedom to unleash my creativity and think outside the box to solve complex problems.

I approach each project with a holistic perspective, ensuring that I understand and address the requirements of users, clients, and other relevant parties. By doing so, I can create win-win solutions that align the interests of all involved, leading to successful outcomes that satisfy everyone.

Over the next 5-10 years, I foresee the design industry embracing significant advancements, especially with the integration of AI. As technology continues to evolve, we might witness innovative design applications in augmented reality, virtual reality, and sustainable design, leading to a more interconnected and socially conscious design industry.

Prioritise passion over seeking awards. Use the platform to advance your design career genuinely, showcasing your unique vision and talent.

Engage in design communities, seek feedback, practice regularly, and work on personal projects. Adaptability and continuous learning are vital in the constantly evolving design industry.

Design inspiration often comes unexpectedly from seemingly unrelated sources and digging into these can lead to enlightening discoveries.

I find inspiration in the people I encounter every day. Each individual brings a unique perspective that enriches my life and influences my design approach. Learning from diverse experiences and viewpoints has shaped me as a designer and a person, fostering empathy and creativity in my work.

Stay tuned to diverse sources as even the most unexpected elements can spark creative ideas and lead to unique design solutions.
