MahaKumbh - World's Largest Gathering by Photographer of the Year, Savadmon Avalachamveettil

MahaKumbh - World's Largest Gathering by Photographer of the Year, Savadmon Avalachamveettil

The First Bathing Hour

Savadmon Avalachamveettil’s winning photograph from the 2025 Global Photography Awards presents a rare scene tied to one of India’s most significant cultural events. Taken during the Maha Kumbh Mela, a gathering held only once every 144 years, the image shows thousands, if not tens of thousands, of ash-covered Naga Sadhus (ascetic holy men in India who are dedicated to Lord Shiva) moving through an immense crowd as dawn breaks.

At the center of it all, a group stands atop a vehicle, surrounded by an ocean of bodies, each individual united by purpose and devotion. The photograph preserves a scene that reflects a long-standing tradition passed through many generations.

The Maha Kumbh Mela draws millions of pilgrims to the banks of the Ganges for sacred bathing rites. In this scene, the Naga Sadhus rush toward the river in the early light. Their ash-covered skin, long hair, and traditional adornments create a striking contrast against the mass of worshippers around them.

The viewpoint from above gives the audience a sense of scale, illustrating how personal belief can bring together crowds of extraordinary size. What stands out is the collective energy visible throughout the image; despite the density of people, there is a clear sense of discipline and shared intention.

The strength of Avalachamveettil’s photograph comes from its straightforward look at the scene. One can sense the movement around the vehicle, notice the items prepared for the ceremony, and read the tension in the bodies of those about to enter the water. Nothing feels staged. It offers a clear window into a long-standing practice that continues quietly across generations.

The Global Photography Awards jurors recognized this photograph for its artistry and its thoughtful presentation of cultural depth. Instead of focusing solely on spectacle, Avalachamveettil chose to emphasize humanity and collective purpose. The result is a powerful visual study of devotion, community, and the traditions that continue to define this gathering.

By approaching the subject with patience and sensitivity, Avalachamveettil highlights the depth of a tradition that is often overlooked. His achievement in the Professional category as the Photographer of the Year reflects the strength and sincerity of his approach.
