Bringing Fingerprint Security to Everyday Life with Robbie Cabral

Robbie Cabral

Robbie Cabral, founder and inventor of BenjiLock, turned a common gym frustration into a groundbreaking biometric security device. His focus on practical problem-solving led to a lock that offers convenience, reliability, and a modern approach to safeguarding personal items.

Thank you so much! It's an incredible honor to win an NY Product Design Awards, especially in the Accessible Technologies category. That truly validates everything we set out to do!

I'm Robbie Cabral, the founder and inventor of BenjiLock. My background wasn't actually in traditional product design; it was in recognizing a massive, everyday frustration and dedicating myself to solving it.

My design journey really began with a personal epiphany at the gym. I saw countless people struggling—fumbling with tiny keys, stressing over forgotten combinations, or just leaving their valuables vulnerable. I realized that security hadn't really evolved in centuries.

That moment inspired me to pursue design not as a career, but as a mission: to create an innovative solution that was instantly personal, incredibly reliable, and fundamentally easier for everyone to use. The BenjiLock design philosophy is centered on inclusive access—using your unique identity (your fingerprint) to simplify a universal need. Winning this award confirms that focusing on human-centered, effortless design truly changes lives.

This recognition is incredibly meaningful, and in a few ways!

First, winning in the Accessible Technologies category for the Outdoor Fingerprint Padlock is the highest form of validation for our design philosophy. BenjiLock was born out of the desire to make security simpler and more inclusive. Traditional keys and combinations are roadblocks for many people. This award proves that our biometric hybrid approach is recognized as a positive step toward universal access, which is something I champion.

Second, it honors the entire journey. As a small business founder who developed the first padlock of its kind, every award like this reinforces the value of perseverance. It elevates the BenjiLock brand, which helps us continue to grow, innovate, and disrupt an industry that frankly needed an upgrade. It truly fuels the mission to provide everyone with simple, personalized security they can trust.

This achievement is a major milestone for BenjiLock and has a profound impact across the board. For me, personally, this validates the initial conviction I had when I designed the very first hybrid padlock. It’s an enormous boost to my belief in the American Dream: you can start with a simple idea and, through relentless innovation and perseverance, create a patented, award-winning solution that truly helps people.

Professionally, winning in the Accessible Technologies category brings immediate, high-level credibility. This isn't just about security anymore; it’s about inclusive design and social responsibility. This recognition has already opened doors to exciting new partnerships and opportunities with retailers and organizations that prioritize accessibility standards, especially in the outdoor, travel, and accessibility sectors.

Furthermore, this amplifies our brand, building on our recent milestone of being named one of TIME's Best Inventions for 2025! This pattern of recognition from top-tier institutions reinforces the superior quality and proven reliability of every BenjiLock product, proving that our solution is not just innovative but essential. It truly fuels our mission to keep moving security forward.

That's a fantastic question. Experimentation is absolutely the heart of our creative process; without it, BenjiLock wouldn't exist.

My initial challenge was a classic design problem: blending old and new technology in a reliable way. I spent months working hands-on, trying to find the perfect way to integrate the traditional key barrel into the biometric lock body as a guaranteed backup.

That foundational Hybrid Lock concept—the fusion of instant fingerprint access with mechanical failsafe trust—was born entirely from that relentless, practical experimentation. It ensures our security is not just innovative, but also accessible and completely dependable.

That's easy: the most unusual source of inspiration was a simple human frustration. It wasn't some piece of machinery or an architectural marvel; it was watching people struggle at the gym with tiny keys and complex codes.

Specifically, the unusual part was realizing that the problem wasn't the padlock itself, but the key. I drew inspiration from the most universal, secure, and always-available "key" in the world: the human body. Building the initial concept around the fingerprint was my way of designing the key out of existence, making the whole process simpler, more personal, and far more intuitive for everyone.

I wish more people understood that simplicity is the hardest outcome. True design success isn't about making a product complicated; it's about making complex technology—like biometrics—feel instantly intuitive and accessible. We spend years perfecting the user experience so it becomes so seamless you never have to think about it. If the product feels effortless, the design process worked perfectly.

With BenjiLock, the balance comes naturally because the brand was born from a personal place: losing everything, rebuilding from scratch, and wanting to design something that made life easier for everyone. That story resonates with people, and it keeps the mission clear: create accessible, intuitive security that feels like a "wow, this just works" moment.

When retailers or customers have specific needs, we adapt, whether that means form factor, materials, or use-case styling—but we never compromise on the core idea that made BenjiLock special in the first place: simple, fingerprint-powered access for all.

So the heart of the design stays true, while the product evolves to fit real lives, from travelers and gym-goers to families, businesses, and everyday users who just want security without the hassle.

One of the biggest challenges was engineering a fingerprint padlock that could handle real outdoor conditions without sacrificing accessibility. We weren’t just designing for convenience, we had to make sure the sensor worked in rain, dust, freezing temperatures, heat, and everything in between. Achieving IP68 protection while keeping the fingerprint recognition fast and reliable took countless rounds of testing and refinement.

We also wanted the lock to be intuitive for users of all ages and abilities, so adding smart LED cues, sound feedback, and a comfortable form factor required a lot of user testing and iteration. We overcame each challenge by staying patient, listening to feedback, and refusing to settle until the padlock felt effortless to use, no matter where or how someone needed it.

When I hit a wall, I stop looking at the product and start looking at the problem again, often by stepping away and getting active. The gym is where the BenjiLock idea struck, and reconnecting with that energy often brings the right design solution into focus.

But my biggest reset button is music. I’m a huge hard-rock fan—going to a concert or just blasting some of my favorite bands instantly clears my head and puts me back in that creative flow. I also love catching an NBA or MLB game. These moments, whether it's the energy of a live show or the rhythm of a game, help me step away, re-energize, and get perspective. When I come back to the workbench, I feel refreshed and ready to build again.

The entire BenjiLock brand is built on three core values: accessibility, perseverance, and the belief in the American Dream. The company was born during one of the toughest periods of my life, and that humility still shapes every design. I want to create products that make life easier for everyone, regardless of age, physical ability, or tech comfort level—so accessibility isn’t just a feature for us, it’s the foundation.

Perseverance is another major pillar. The journey from a simple idea to a patent and eventually to Shark Tank took years of grit, learning, and pushing through setbacks. That same spirit guides our approach to building products that are reliable, intuitive, and genuinely helpful in everyday life.

Above all, my designs carry a message I deeply believe in: don’t be afraid to dream big. If you have a vision or a passion, go for it. With dedication and heart, even the simplest idea can grow into something meaningful and impactful.

My biggest advice is to stay curious, stay humble, and stay persistent! Don’t be afraid to start small or imperfect, every great idea begins as a sketch, a spark, or even a mistake. Listen to people, observe real-life problems, and design with empathy, because the best products come from understanding what others truly need.

And most importantly, believe in your vision. There were many moments when BenjiLock felt impossible, but passion and perseverance kept it alive. Dream big, work hard, and keep going even when it gets challenging! That’s where the real breakthroughs happen.

I would be thrilled to collaborate with Jony Ive, former Chief Design Officer at Apple! His work is the global benchmark for transforming complex technology into experiences that feel effortless, intuitive, and beautiful. That philosophy, removing every barrier between user and function—perfectly aligns with BenjiLock’s mission.

I believe we share a deep commitment to making technology seamless and accessible, and I would be excited to work with him to design the next generation of personalized security: a product so elegant and intuitive that it feels like it disappears into daily life.

People often ask me what truly drives me as an entrepreneur, and the answer is creating technology that feels human, personal, private, and effortless, where innovation ultimately serves real people, not just features.
