Amber Yi-Ching Lin Explores the Balance Between Practical Living and Visual Harmony

Amber Yi-Ching Lin is the founder and design director of Nanowarm Design (奈子光空間設計), with a decade of experience focused on human-centered interior spaces. Her approach prioritizes functionality, circulation, light, and ventilation, ensuring each design meaningfully improves daily living while maintaining refined aesthetics.

I am Amber Yi-Ching Lin, the founder and design director of Nanowarm Design (奈子光空間設計). With a decade of professional experience in the industry, I have come to believe that the most vital part of interior design is the deep, empathetic communication with homeowners to truly understand and meet their essential needs.

At Nanowarm Design, I advocate for the seamless integration of practical functionality and high-end aesthetics. I prioritize fundamental spatial elements—such as circulation, natural sunlight, and ventilation—as my primary design considerations. My goal is to solve my clients' problems and enhance their quality of life by creating living environments that perfectly balance elegant design with high functionality.

The core concept of this project is the "Co-existence of Humans and Pets." With the rapid growth of the pet market in Taiwan, I noticed a gap where pet needs were often treated as an afterthought. I challenged this by prioritizing the relationship between humans and their animal companions from the very beginning of the layout phase. The unique feature of this project is the detailed research into shared circulation and spatial scales.

To achieve this, I conducted extensive home visits to observe the pets' specific temperaments and daily routines. Furthermore, I integrated functional materials—such as waterproof flooring and high-durability, scratch-resistant surfaces—to ensure a stress-free and enduring environment for the whole family.

I believe this project stands out because it treats pets not just as animals, but as integral members of the family. While many commercial spaces now carry "pet-friendly" labels, my project goes much deeper by integrating those needs into the very foundation of the home.

I am not just adding "friendly" features; I am redefining the property industry’s approach to modern households by ensuring that the health, circulation, and lifestyle of the entire family—pets included—are perfectly harmonized. This pioneering vision of seeing pets as true residents, whose biological needs shape the architecture, is what distinguishes my work.

When I first received the news, I was filled with deep gratitude toward the judges for recognizing Nanowarm Design’s mission—to create a sanctuary for families and their beloved fur-babies. But immediately after, my thoughts turned to the homeowner.

I am so thankful for their courage to embrace such a pioneering concept and the incredible chemistry we built through extensive communication. It was this mutual trust and shared vision that allowed me to turn the dream of a "human-cat co-living" environment into a reality.

The inspiration for this project stemmed from my belief that a home should be a shared sanctuary that respects the biological needs of all inhabitants. Through my research, I discovered that expanding a cat's vertical running space can effectively address health issues like lack of exercise and stress-related vomiting.

A truly meaningful moment was working side-by-side with the homeowner to physically "stretch out" their four cats to measure their full length and maximum jumping capacity.

Since each cat has a unique personality, I tailored the paths to suit their individual temperaments. Seeing these "fur-babies" now using the spaces exactly as planned gives me immense encouragement; it feels as if they finally understood my intentions.

The most surprising and rewarding part was the cats' reaction to the finished space. While I conducted rigorous research, you can never fully predict how animals will truly adapt to a new environment.

Although it took a little bit of time and patience to guide the cats through their new surroundings, I successfully helped them learn how to navigate and fully utilize the space. Seeing their seamless adaptation and the joy they found in their new vertical paths was the most beautiful "surprise" of this entire journey.

I firmly believe that functionality should always take precedence over aesthetics. While visual trends are fluid, the practical utility of a space is an essential constant. This is why I view functionality as the "invisible backbone" of beauty. However, there are moments when trade-offs become difficult.

In those times, I always return to the residents themselves. Through continuous dialogue, I find the balance that fits their real lifestyle. My goal is to ensure the space feels like a warm home rather than a clinical lab, serving every family member without ever compromising on aesthetic quality.

The most significant challenge I faced was managing the placement of the litter boxes for a four-cat household. Accommodating at least four litter boxes in a typical apartment creates major concerns regarding air quality and odor. I spent a great deal of time exploring how to resolve this without compromising the indoor experience.

My solution involved a creative modification of the apartment’s balcony. I designed a "cat portal" that allows the cats to pass freely through a dedicated cat door to a ventilated outdoor restroom area.

Of course, I implemented rigorous safety measures to ensure the cats are fully protected. This led to an unexpected surprise: these cats can now safely enjoy natural sunlight and fresh air. Solving a functional odor issue while giving them the right to bask in the sun is the achievement I am most proud of.

Winning this award is a profound validation of my design philosophy and will serve as a powerful catalyst for the next chapter of my career. It encourages me to delve even deeper into the fields of "Human-Pet Co-living" and "Customized Special Life Needs," proving that professional functionality is the core driver of high-end aesthetic innovation.

This honor empowers me to challenge traditional industry frameworks and advocate for a new standard in property development—one where spaces are designed around the health and deep emotional bonds of every resident.

With this global momentum, I will continue to lead trends on the international stage, creating sanctuaries that support the long-term happiness of modern families.

I believe pet-oriented residential design is only the beginning; it ignites a much broader and essential conversation regarding the future of urban environmental planning. From pet-friendly restaurants and hotels to specialized hospitals and even intergenerational senior living facilities where pets and the elderly co-exist, the possibilities are vast and exhilarating.

My objective is to inspire developers and designers to realize that a powerful design is never merely a beautiful backdrop. It is, at its core, a precise and empathetic solution—one that continuously evolves alongside the complex and diverse needs of every family member, whether human or pet.

I believe sustainability is a collective responsibility, and I integrate eco-conscious practices into every stage—from the construction site to the final material selection. During renovation, I prioritize the reuse of protective materials across different sites to minimize waste. I also employ dust-filtration systems on machinery to mitigate pollution during construction.

Beyond the site, I focus on the long-term health of the indoor environment. I prioritize low-formaldehyde, non-toxic materials and consistently favor certified green building products. While balancing these choices within a client's budget can be a challenge, I strive to ensure each home is as kind to the planet as it is to its inhabitants.

To me, everyone who seeks my design carries a specific dream of their ideal space in their heart, and I see myself as the "Dream Realizer" who brings those visions to life. As a dream builder, I believe the most vital task is to listen—not just to the words of the homeowners, but also to the subtle "voice" of the environment and the context surrounding the space. I view myself as a balance scale and a bridge between the residents and their environment, harmonizing different needs to create a project where everyone can truly thrive.
