Interview with Randi Rheaa | A Talented Beauty & Fashion Photographer with Rheaa Obscura

I studied photography at Southwest University of Visual Arts, where I refined my craft and developed my unique style within the industry.

I remember taking my very first shot with my father's digital camera, which he had as a beta for his career. It was on a golf course with my dad and uncle, enjoying a day out in nature—something I always loved. The scene was a stunning contrast of lush greenery amidst the desert rocks, a moment that truly captured the beauty of nature and inspired my passion for photography. That experience inspired me to carry my camera everywhere, eager to capture the world around me and preserve the moments I treasured.

I primarily work as a digital photographer, spending most of my time in a studio where I can create controlled environments. I’ve always found comfort and clarity in these settings, as I’ve struggled with the unpredictability of external factors. While I currently shoot with Sony equipment, Nikon still holds a special place in my heart.

As a photographer, my goal is to create images that leave a lasting impression on the viewer. However, what I value most is fostering a deep connection throughout the process, both with my team and the subjects I photograph.

The greatest compliment I've ever received is when my subjects or teams feel as good about a series of images as I do. It’s incredibly rewarding when someone not only values the work we’ve created but also cherishes the experience we shared during the process.

My work is inspired by my personal struggle with identity as a woman. Each image I create represents a moment in my journey, reflecting how society's projections of beauty have influenced my own life.

This series of images was designed to reflect the evolving nature of the beauty industry. We created it to envision the future of beauty and explore how it will be constructed, using a parallel of various mediums.

Accepting this award serves to inspire other photographers and creatives to continue advancing in their own journeys. It's crucial for creatives to constantly push beyond barriers.

I draw inspiration from Richard Avedon, Tim Walker, and David LaChapelle.

The best advice I received from a mentor was, "You have to learn to sweep the floors before you can learn anything else." This means you must master the basics and be willing to start with simple tasks before creating impactful art. If your space isn’t organised, your ideas won’t be either.

My best advice for someone starting their creative journey is to never say no, as you never know who might influence your path. Create from within and stay committed to your journey.

My key to success is to never give up. Stay committed to your journey, as it holds meaning and purpose. Always push your boundaries, because everything you seek lies beyond fear.
