A Touch of Luxury: Tsz Ki Connie Lau’s Chinese New Year Gift Box for Les Lunes à Deux

Tsz Ki Connie Lau is a visual designer and content creator based in Hong Kong, with experience working in the UK and across Europe. She helps brands communicate their vision through compelling visual and written content. Most recently, she contributed to the packaging design for Les Lunes à Deux Limited, specifically the Chinese New Year Deluxe Gift Box Sleeve.

I am a visual designer and content creator currently based in Hong Kong, and sometimes (and previously) in the UK and other countries in Europe. I have been helping brands and companies deliver their business strategies by planning and creating both visual and textual content.

Recently, I have been handling packaging design projects for the fine pastry brand Les Lunes à Deux Limited, which has given me the opportunity to participate with my latest work — the Chinese New Year Deluxe Gift Box Sleeve.

To put it in short, working as a designer offers me endless opportunities to express my creativity and also make a positive impact. Design is everywhere in our lives, especially as the industry deals with creativity and innovation.

Les Lunes à Deux is a fine pastry brand specializing in festive pastries that embody a sense of luxury and joy in every celebration. As a designer, I create engaging and innovative packaging designs that effectively showcase the brand's products and appeal to the target audience.

To me, "design" means a lot — it is a way for each of us to express ourselves and create something larger than who we are; it is about communicating feelings through visual sensations and unique experiences; it is also about problem-solving with strategic planning and analytical thinking to achieve outcomes through complex processes.

Mine is "Communication Design" in terms of visual design, in the form of packaging — at the moment, for what I am doing. It's simply because I love and enjoy what I’m doing.

A good design is not just about being aesthetic, but about balancing form, function, and user-centered design principles. It’s even better when a design has a positive impact on human lives.

I am a minimalist, and I believe the sense of minimalism is blended into the brand's DNA/ethos, which has led me to create the Deluxe Gift Box Sleeve design.

I often conduct research before putting my ideas into design.

Yes, it has! Chinese New Year is such a big festive event in Chinese-speaking countries and regions. The design process often involved visual elements of Chinese festivities.

Definitely, it means a lot to me as the creator and to my entire team who supported me in the design and execution. We feel honoured and encouraged to have received this award and to work even harder to create meaningful packaging with a positive impact in the future.

It is, in fact, my first-ever packaging design to be executed and come to market, and I chose this project to participate in the MUSE Design Awards simply because it marks my first foray into the packaging area.

There were many. Since this is my first packaging design project, there were mistakes and errors due to my lack of solid experience in printing. However, I studied and researched extensively while communicating with the printing house to merge my creativity and imagination into the real execution of printing and producing the final product.

I think it will be a great encouragement to help me further pursue my design career, without a doubt, and it will help me become a better designer.

Be creative: Turning ideas into designs because I enjoy applying my creativity in my work.

A collaborative effort: Sometimes, I have the opportunity to work with other designers or creative friends, and it's always great to get a fresh perspective on a project, especially if I'm feeling stuck.

Sense of accomplishment: I get to see my work on display or in real execution, whether through social media and websites as online design or product packaging as printed design.

Hong Kong always has a mix of Oriental and Western cultures. Influenced by multinational cultures, it enriches design with diversity.

AI technology is already being implemented and is highly integrated into design. Since AI will primarily focus on optimization and speed, designers working with AI can create designs faster and more cost-effectively due to the increased speed and efficiency it offers. However, I am unsure if and how quickly AI can or will fully replace designers.

I think it's crucial to consider what "good design" means to you and what you want to deliver to your target audience. Conducting research is always recommended before translating your ideas into design.

I would say always stay updated on market trends and upgrade your skills in design programs, in addition to your design sense, knowledge, and creativity.

Since I wasn't working as a designer at the beginning of my career, a few years ago, I never expected I would become one, and I'm curious to see how far I will go in the future.

Some designer friends from different design fields have inspired me to become a designer. I see them as my role models, and to me, they’re the successful ones. I wondered if I could be like them one day, so I began preparing myself to be a designer. Now, I’m really working as one.

Success requires dedication, passion and effort.

Again, my team and I are just grateful to have this opportunity to present our festive packaging work in the MUSE Design Awards.
