I am Xinchen Li, an artist and designer specialising in metalsmithing, jewellery design, and installation art. My journey began in computer science, but I transitioned into the arts, captivated by the potential of materials and the act of making. My work often draws on themes of nostalgia, cultural heritage, and the interplay between traditional craftsmanship and contemporary innovation.

I became an artist because of my fascination with how materials can hold and tell stories. The transition from computer science to art was driven by my need to explore creative freedom and my love for transforming everyday objects into meaningful, tangible pieces of art. It is my way of connecting with people through visual storytelling.

Currently, I work as a multidisciplinary artist and designer, creating wearable art, installations, and jewellery. My practice combines metalsmithing techniques, 3D printing, and innovative material use. I also teach art workshops to foster creativity and inspire others to explore their artistic potential.

Design is a bridge between functionality and artistry. It’s about creating objects or experiences that resonate emotionally, solve problems, and enhance our connection to the world around us.

I love designs that integrate personal narratives with innovative materials. My favourite designs often blur the line between art and utility, offering both aesthetic value and meaningful stories.

A good design is one that feels intuitive and purposeful while evoking emotion. It should balance innovation, functionality, and aesthetics, leaving a lasting impression.

The idea for the Raindrop Iris Cocktail Ring came from my fascination with nature’s beauty and its symbolism. I wanted to create a piece that combined traditional craftsmanship with contemporary techniques, celebrating the elegance of the iris flower and the emotions it represents.

My main inspiration was the iris flower’s symbolism of hope, wisdom, and admiration. The dewdrops on its petals inspired the use of pearls, while the vibrant colours reflect the flower’s natural beauty.

Absolutely. Growing up in China, I was surrounded by rich traditions and intricate craftsmanship, which continue to influence my designs. My work often explores themes of nostalgia, cultural identity, and the preservation of heritage through modern techniques.

Winning this award is an incredible honour and validates the effort and passion I’ve poured into my work. It also inspires me to continue pushing boundaries and sharing my vision with a wider audience.

The Raindrop Iris Cocktail Ring celebrates the intricate beauty of nature through the lens of innovative design. Its multifunctionality, vibrant colour palette, and symbolism set it apart. I chose this project because it embodies my design philosophy—blending tradition and innovation to tell a story.

One of the main challenges was arranging the stones on the flower petals to achieve the desired gradient effect while ensuring structural stability and aesthetic balance. The transition from yellow to white to purple required precise planning to maintain a seamless flow of colours and proportions.

To overcome this, I experimented with various stone sizes, placements, and settings, creating multiple mockups and prototypes. This process taught me the importance of patience, precision, and creative problem-solving in the design journey.

Winning this award is a significant milestone that provides both recognition and motivation. It also opens doors to new opportunities, collaborations, and exposure to a wider audience.

On a personal level, this achievement motivates me to push my boundaries even further, continue innovating, and explore new creative possibilities. It reinforces my commitment to my craft and inspires me to strive for excellence in every project moving forward.

1. The endless opportunities for innovation.

2. The ability to connect with people on an emotional level through design.

The community of passionate and inspiring designers.

My design uniquely combines traditional craftsmanship with modern material innovation, offering both aesthetic appeal and functional versatility.

I believe the industry will focus more on sustainability and multi-functionality, using innovative materials and techniques to address environmental concerns while meeting modern lifestyle demands.

Focus on your unique voice and vision. Experiment with materials, stay curious and don’t be afraid to be rejected.

Workshops, online learning platforms, and books on design history and materials. Visiting museums. Networking with other designers and seeking mentorship is invaluable too.

The hardest part of my design journey was believing I belonged in the art world after transitioning from computer science. Winning awards and receiving recognition reassures me that I’m on the right path.

My mom and my dog have been my greatest inspirations. My mom taught me the value of resilience and kindness. My dog has been a source of pure, unconditional love and companionship. Their presence reminds me of the importance of living in the moment and finding joy in the simplest things. Both of them have shaped my outlook on life and continue to inspire me to approach my work and relationships with compassion and authenticity.

Insist on following your path, trust yourself, and don’t let others’ opinions overshadow your passion or creativity. True success comes from believing in your work, persevering through obstacles, and staying authentic to your values.

Thank you for this opportunity to share my story.
