As CEO and Co-Founder of Light Source Communications (LSC), Debra Freitas leads the creation of critical fiber infrastructure that supports some of the world's largest hyperscalers and enterprises.

I am the CEO and Co-Founder of Light Source Communications (LSC). Since co-founding the company in 2014, I have led our team in designing, building, and operating high-capacity underground dark fiber networks.

LSC is a carrier-neutral provider serving some of the world's largest hyperscalers and enterprises. We engineer the critical infrastructure that powers AI, machine learning, and the next generation of digital workloads.

This recognition feels like a powerful validation of the momentum we have built. Being recognized as a leader in Digital Transformation reinforces LSC’s position at the forefront of the industry. On a personal level, it is an honor to be recognized among such an accomplished group of women leaders for the second consecutive year—an achievement I do not take lightly.

Professionally, this recognition further strengthens our reputation as a trusted partner in digital infrastructure while reinforcing my belief that women can lead, innovate, and succeed in even the most demanding environments. Most importantly, it is incredibly rewarding to see the dedication and hard work of our entire team recognized on such a significant stage.

I was inspired to submit because the TITAN Awards celebrate the transformative power of female leadership. I felt confident in our submission because of LSC’s tangible impact—we are not just talking about the digital future; we are building it.

This submission is not only about our company’s growth, but also about my own journey as a leader. It reflects my evolution into a stronger voice within the industry and my commitment to advancing the conversation around how physical infrastructure must evolve to meet the unprecedented demands of the AI era.

The turning point was not a change in strategy, but rather the moment the industry’s priorities aligned with the vision LSC had been building toward for years. Historically, conversations about digital infrastructure focused primarily on data centers and software. While much of the industry concentrated on those layers of the technology stack, I remained focused on what I believed was the most critical—and often overlooked—component: dark fiber.

That conviction required resilience, patience, and the confidence to continue building for the future long before the market fully recognized its importance. For years, we operated quietly, investing in infrastructure that we knew would eventually become essential.

Today, that long-term vision is being realized. One milestone I am particularly proud of is our recent 400-mile long-haul route connecting Amarillo, Oklahoma City, and Tulsa, which integrates with our 500-mile St. Louis-to-Tulsa corridor. These networks were not built to follow a trend; they were built because I believed regional connectivity would become a critical foundation for the AI era.

Looking back, this achievement reinforces an important lesson: meaningful growth often comes from staying committed to a clear vision and building the infrastructure that future innovation will depend on.

The greatest challenge was managing the scale and complexity of our infrastructure projects while maintaining the flexibility to respond to the emerging demands of the AI era. In this industry, true agility is difficult to achieve because these projects involve large-scale, long-term physical infrastructure that typically does not allow for rapid strategic shifts.

We addressed this challenge through disciplined execution and a highly focused approach. Rather than trying to serve every market, we concentrated on becoming the leading provider in key high-demand corridors. By developing deep expertise in areas such as municipal agreements, permitting, and underground construction, we were able to move with a level of speed and efficiency that is uncommon in this sector.

That combination of specialization, operational discipline, and strategic focus became a significant competitive advantage, allowing us to deliver greater value to our customers and partners.

I plan to use this platform to highlight the incredible opportunities available to women in digital infrastructure. This is one of the most transformative industries in the world today, and I believe there has never been a more exciting time to be part of it.

I hope to encourage more women to recognize that the skills needed to shape the future of digital infrastructure—strategic thinking, resilience, leadership, and operational excellence—are qualities they already possess. As we build the foundation for the AI era, diverse perspectives and strong leadership will be more important than ever.

The greatest benefit was the opportunity to reflect. In the day-to-day pace of building networks and managing growth, it is easy to overlook how much progress has been made. Preparing the submission gave us a chance to pause, measure our achievements, and view our journey from a broader perspective.

That reflection was incredibly valuable. It reinforced the impact of our work, clarified our long-term direction, and strengthened our understanding of the values that continue to drive us every day.

While this achievement reflects the dedication of the entire LSC team, I would like to personally recognize my co-founder and Chief Strategy Officer, Pete Empie. Pete is not only an exceptional business partner but also a close friend, and building LSC alongside him has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my professional career.

His vision, leadership, and unwavering commitment have played a critical role in our growth, and I am grateful to have shared this journey with him.

We have moved beyond trends and into a fundamental industrial transformation driven by the AI era. AI is not a temporary phenomenon; it is becoming a permanent requirement for global computing and is reshaping the demands placed on digital infrastructure. AI and machine learning workloads require unprecedented capacity, ultra-low latency, and exceptional resilience—requirements that many legacy networks were not designed to support.

At LSC, we are helping lead this transformation through operational excellence and long-term strategic planning. We do more than build standard routes; we engineer customized, fully underground networks designed to minimize risk and enhance reliability. By anticipating growth in emerging technology hubs and staying ahead of data center and power infrastructure development, we ensure our networks are in place before demand reaches its peak.

Our approach is not simply about expansion—it is about setting a higher standard for how critical data is transported, protected, and supported in the AI era.

My advice to the next generation of women is simple: jump in with both feet. Don’t just watch this transformation happen—be part of driving it. Digital infrastructure is one of the most exciting, challenging, and rewarding industries today, with endless opportunities to make a meaningful impact.

Just as importantly, bring others along with you. Encourage, support, and mentor other women as they enter the field. We need more diverse voices at the table to help shape how AI and digital infrastructure evolve and influence the world around us.

I believe the most important thing is to focus on the purpose behind the progress. While metrics and growth are important measures of success, the real story lies in the problem you are solving and the impact your work has on your industry, community, or customers. Be specific about the challenges you have overcome and how your perspective as a leader helped guide those decisions.

My advice is to take the time to reflect on why your work matters. The strongest stories are not just about achievements—they are about the lasting impact you create and the path you help pave for the next generation of women in business.

We have ambitious goals for the next 12 months as we continue expanding our network and supporting the growing demands of the AI era. We are actively evaluating new markets where demand for AI infrastructure is accelerating and where high-capacity connectivity will be critical to future growth.

Our goal is to remain the provider of choice for organizations that need resilient, future-ready networks built to support the next generation of digital innovation.
