Exploring Passion & Imagination in Landscape Design with Vongvasu Chaloisap

Vongvasu Chaloisap

Vongvasu Chaloisap, founder of the landscape architecture firm VVdesine, is a visionary designer from Chulalongkorn University, Thailand’s leading design institution. With a career spanning top firms in Singapore and Thailand, he is dedicated to crafting transformative, timeless spaces that seamlessly merge art, science, and imagination, each uniquely tailored to reflect bold creativity and innovative design.

Hey, I'm Vongvasu Chaloisap. After graduating in Landscape Architecture from Chulalongkorn University, Thailand's top design school, I spent 3 years practising landscape architecture in Singapore, followed by another 3 years with Thailand's top design firm, before establishing my own Landscape Architecture design firm, "VVdesine".

I am committed to creating transformative experiences by pushing design boundaries, exploring innovative materials and approaches, customising each project to embody its unique vision, and creating timeless spaces filled with passion.

I have always been driven by good design since I was a kid and have always enjoyed exploring the world of design, constantly wondering how designers come up with ideas. I aspired to be one of them.

My firm, VVdesine Landscape Architecture, was founded in 2012 and situated in the heart of Bangkok, VVdesine is a distinguished multidisciplinary design studio specialising in landscape architecture and is driven to create inspired and artful designs in a variety of contexts.

Supported by two additional studios — including Hortus, which specialises in softscape design, and VVplayaround, which specialises in experimental art and design — VVdesine brings an adept multidisciplinary approach to each design challenge, allowing for the creation of design solutions with sophistication, enduring social impact, and graceful aesthetics. The firm is characterised by its inventive problem-solving, pragmatic creators, and multidisciplinary design approach.

With an overarching focus on the human experience and fostering a long-lasting, positive social impact, VVdesine is recognised for harmoniously integrating landscape architecture with memorable art forms to bring vibrancy and a distinctive spatial dialect to each project.

The firm's commitment to crafting and conceiving tailored spatial experiences for people, as well as whimsical play structures for children, is supported by a keen interest in experimental art and design, as well as a passion for creating intimate yet multifaceted garden environments.

VVdesine's work is diverse and includes university residences, communities, hotels and artful playground settings for children. Our design approach is informed by the site context and its potential, the end users, and the programmatic elements, which empower a process of exploration and experimentation, allowing for the creation of innovative spatial characters.

Hallmarks of VVdesine's work are unconventional and innovative methodologies of exploration; multidimensional and new approaches to public realm design; and an adept artistry of horticulture and craftsmanship.

It means a unique creation with the integration of art, science, critical thinking, and most importantly, the power of strong imagination.

It’s one that seamlessly harmonises humanity and nature while embodying a strong and unique design language.

A great number of knowledge, experiences, inspirations and hours of experimentation.

The idea for NINJA HOUSE was inspired by the community and its people. Transforming a small garden into a whimsical playground was about revitalising the neighbourhood, creating a vibrant hub where all generations could come together to play, explore, and share quality time.

My daughter, VVille, was my greatest inspiration. Watching her play, explore with friends, challenge herself, and enjoy various playgrounds taught me what truly captivates children and makes a play space special for them.

Absolutely. Thailand’s rich cultural heritage is a significant influence. With diverse traditions from across the country, we Thais are skilled at blending different elements harmoniously. This cultural depth is reflected in our designs, especially in the use of colours, patterns, and spatial arrangements.

It means the world to us. London Design Awards opens doors to global recognition, and we are incredibly grateful. At VVdesine, we are motivated to push ourselves further and create even greater designs in the future.

Small Gardens, like the one featured in NINJA HOUSE, are often left abandoned or unattended due to space limitations. I wanted to transform such a space into something valuable for the community. As there are millions more of such spaces worldwide, I hope NINJA HOUSE serves as an inspiring role model for breathing new life into neglected spaces.

The main challenge was understanding the diverse needs of users and ensuring NINJA HOUSE was accessible to all. This involved extensive observation, data analysis, creating models, and, most importantly, engaging directly with the community to understand their real needs.

It’s a significant milestone that brings global recognition to my firm and opens new opportunities for us.

1. Design for humanity.

2. Design for nature.

3. Design with full passion.

Our playful and imaginative approach.

Nature-based solutions will take centre stage, playing the most important role in shaping designs.

Be yourself, keep exploring and never give up.

Travel and explore the world as much as you can. Experiencing real spaces and observing how people interact with them is far more inspiring than studying them through books or the internet.

Years ago, I experienced burnout syndrome, which almost made me give up on my career and firm. However, taking time off and exploring new countries and places saved me. Today, I am more passionate, committed, and energised than ever before.

Lawrence Halprin, Peter Walker and Frank Lloyd Wright have always been my inspiration. Their design philosophies through their works deeply influenced me since I was a design student.

Free your mind, fill your brain.

Stay tuned for more of our upcoming works.
